JavaScript Trends in 2022: React, Elm, TypeScript

The State of JavaScript recently conducted a survey to identify the trends and reality of JavaScript in 2022. Over 16,000 respondents took part in the survey.

Let’s take a look at the key takeaways from the survey results.

Popular JavaScript frameworks in 2022

In the past few years, JavaScript has become popular in front-end, back-end, and full-stack development. The respondents in the survey ranked the frameworks according to their interest in the framework, actual usage, awareness, popularity, and retention.

Here are the key trends in 2022 for frameworks:

React.JS is the most popular framework for front-end development

However, developers are more interested in using Svelte and Solid and retaining them for further development as compared to React.JS.

React.JS’s drop in rankings can be explained due to the high expectations from developers. When something’s popular, people usually expect more from it.

Angular.JS remained in the second position for actual usage and the third position for awareness.

Next.JS took the first position as the most popular backend and full-stack development framework.

Other takeaways from the JavaScript survey:

Over 98 percent of respondents use TypeScript as a JavaScript compiler.

Tsc is increasing in popularity as a build tool for compiling TypeScript to JavaScript via tscconfig.json file.

The survey also revealed that JavaScript developers like using bullish coalescing and optional changing.

For browser API, over 70 percent of developers in the survey are using WebStocks.

The Jest testing framework is being widely used by developers to run tests on JavaScript and TypeScript codes. Jest testing framework can be easily integrated with React.JS, a major reason behind its increasing popularity.

Webpack is the most used build tool in JavaScript. Vite is rising in popularity as it addresses some of the shortcomings of WebPack.

A majority of JavaScript developers come from the United States. But the survey also reveals that globally, the number of JS developers is increasing.

Let’s take a look at the key demographics of the survey’s respondents:

Most of the respondents have more than three years of experience with JavaScript.

Over 14 percent of respondents were from the United States.

Seventy percent of the respondents filled out the survey in the English language.

Over 39 percent of respondents were from the age group of 25-34 years.
